Activities and ideas for a Gingerbread Theme in your preschool, pre-k or kindergarten classroom:

Literacy Gingerbread Themed Preschool Activities

  1. Sequencing fun gingerbread stories like 'Gingerbread Man' or 'Gingerbread Baby' (links at the end of this post).
  2. Creating a Class Book about out running the gingerbread man.  "Run, run as fast as I can, {student's name} can outrun the gingerbread man!". Students draw a picture of themselves running faster than the gingerbread man.
  3. Go on a Gingerbread Hunt.  Bake a gingerbread man ahead of time and tell students that it is waiting in the oven.  Start a scavenger hunt at the oven, leading through the school, using written clues.
  4. Gingerbread 5 Senses: bring in gingerbread cookies for students to sample.  Use your 5 senses to to describe how the cookies look, smell, sound, feel and taste.

  1. Decorate a cardboard house shape to look like a gingerbread house using puffy paints, sequins, candies and anything else you would like to add.
  2. Make a batch of gingerbread scented playdough and roll and cut gingerbread men with cookie cutters.
  3. Paint with gingerbread scented paint by adding cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves to the paint.
  4. Make cinnamon dough ornaments by mixing applesauce and cinnamon until a dough forms. Roll, cut out shapes and let dry for several days. 
  5. Cut gingerbread men from sandpaper and use cinnamon sticks and rub on sandpaper to add a scent.  Then, add eyes, buttons and other embelishments.

  1. Make gumdrop patterns using colored gumdrop candies.
  2. Using a balance scale weigh gingerbread cookies and compare the weights.
  3. Count acorns to practice 1-1 correspondence.
  4. Do some action patterns and pretend to be a gingerbread man getting away.  Run fast, hide, run fast, hide.... or tip toe, jump, tip toe, jump.
  5. Create a salt tray by mixing a cup of salt with 2 tsp each of allspice, ginger and cinnamon. Place in a shallow tray and add a paintbrush.  Encourage students to practice writing numerals in the salt tray - shake gently to erase.

Gingerbread themed sensory tub

Create a fun sensory bin ready for little working hands by combining a bag of rice with 1/2tbs each of water, vanilla and cinnamon.  Let dry.  Add scoops, ice cube trays, funnels, measuring cups, gingerbread cookie cutters and other gingerbread accessories.
